How to identify a phishing email and what actions to take immediately.
Signs of a phishing email
- Unexpected requests to click a link or open an attachment
- Urgent language: "Your account will be closed", "Immediate action required"
- The sender's email address looks slightly wrong (e.g. support@micros0ft.com)
- Poor spelling and grammar
- Requests for your password, credit card number, or personal information
- Links that do not match the company's real website when you hover over them
If you received a suspicious email
- Do not click any links in the email
- Do not open any attachments
- Do not reply to the sender
- Report it to IT by forwarding the email as an attachment to IT support, or use the "Report Phishing" button in Outlook
- Delete the email from your inbox
If you clicked a link or entered your details
Contact IT immediately. Do not wait. Tell IT:
- What link you clicked and what website it took you to
- Whether you entered any credentials (username, password)
- Whether you downloaded or opened any files
- The time this happened
IT will take action to protect your account as quickly as possible.
Remember
IT support will never ask for your password by email, phone, or in person. If anyone asks for your password, refuse and report it to IT immediately.
